Class Show, 4 Square, and an Improv Resolution

by Ben Whitehouse.

So, it’s been pretty quiet around the Improvoker parts of the globe, not for lack of news, but more for lack of time. I’ve gone from temporary improv hiatus, to full time improv employee. I now feel like improv is my second job. Let me explain.

Before I started my Billy Merritt 401 5 weeks back, I had dropped out of all my practice groups. I had sworn off all improv contact, aside from Harold Night at UCB, because I was just completely burned out. I was improvising 5 nights a week and felt utterly devoid of interesting ideas in scenes. Then 401 started, I joined a few groups, and I signed up for a few more classes. Now I am up to my eyes in improv and every evening at 6, I pack up from regular paying work, and head to my second job — improv.

9th Annual Del Close Marathon

The 9th Annual Del Close Marathon was announced today. Applications to perform will be accepted until May 7th.

The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre is proud to announce the dates for the 9th Annual Del Close Marathon!

This year’s marathon will be the weekend of July 27–29, and will take place on three stages. We’ll also have awesome special shows during the week leading up to the marathon (July 23–27)

And all week long we’ll be offering special workshops. Details TBA.

If you’d like to submit your group to be a part of the DCM, please see our submission guidelines and complete an application at http://www.delclosemarathon.com.

Also — this year we’re looking for more out-of-town groups to submit late-night shows — shows like last year’s Emanciprov!, Warcraft-prov, Dicemen, etc. If you have a great idea for a late-night improv show you want to do — submit it!

And remember — if you’d like your show to be considered for a primetime slot, and we do not already know you or your show, you should send us a DVD or videotape of the show.

The deadline for submission is May 7.

Best,
Anthony King

Something tells me that this year UCB is going to be inundated with applications to perform, so get your application in early kids.

Harold and Maude Night

by Ben Whitehouse.

If you want to sing out, sing out…” UCB NY Announces a new sketch show and makes a pun.

The UCB Theatre is thrilled to announce the creation of MAUDE NIGHT!

Much like Harold Night showcases the improv talent of performers who have completed classes at the UCB Theatre, Maude Night will feature sketch comedy written by students who have completed sketch classes at the UCB Theatre.

WHAT IS A MAUDE TEAM?

  • Maude Teams will consist of six (6) writers each. These writers will have the option of being writers only or writer/performers.
  • Maude Teams will meet once a week with an approved director to get feedback on their sketches and will put up a show at the UCB Theatre once a month featuring the material they have created.
  • Maude Teams are meant to to create opportunities for sketch writers to improve by:
    • getting regular feedback on their material
    • getting experience in a “writer’s room”
    • writing for a deadline
    • seeing/performing their work on stage
