In an article entitled Class Clowns, the New York Times talks about Human Giant and the amazing alum coming out of UCBNY at the moment. It’s a pretty extensive article that really goes into great detail about the incredible talent currently performing at the theater. As a student and performer at UCB, it’s really wonderful to have such a prestigious newspaper spotlight what is, in my opinion, one of the most creative and community based theaters in all of the country. It’s outrageous that a comedy club in Manhattan has shows every night of the week, most of them experimental, all of them cutting edge, a stage which is open to anyone (in the theater or not) to put on shows, all for the regular price of $5, sometimes free, $8 on weekends!
Did I mention the super reasonably priced bar?

UCBNY is the Future of Comedy
What few viewers of the MTV comic marathon may have realized was that nearly all of these promising young comedians had honed their craft at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, also known as U.C.B., a leaky, shabby and (usually) funny improv studio underneath a Gristedes supermarket in Chelsea. Its evolution into a farm system for television talent is remarkable for many reasons, not least of which is that the theater started its life in New York.
The article goes on.
The New York scene began to grow in 1999 after the opening of U.C.B.‘s first theater and school in a former strip club on West 22nd Street. Many of the theater’s students went on to star in shows at the U.C.B. and other theaters, performing under names that range from the absurdly specific (Twelve Thousand Dollars) and the nonsensical (Rogue Elephant) to the unprintable.
In many ways, New York’s thriving improv culture resembles Chicago’s, but with one critical difference: Here, amateur comics can reasonably hope that their next onstage impersonation of a hypochondriac hamster might land them a job on television. And as more and more of those hopes have been realized, thanks to New York-based shows like “The Daily Show,” “The Colbert Report,” “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” and “Saturday Night Live,” U.C.B. has sought to reinforce its position as a leading conservatory for the next generation of big-time comedians.
I think I might get the entire article tattooed on my back.
I was a guest on the last Haroldcast #3 hosted by Del Far last week. We talked about a lot of things comedy related including the importance of Funny or Die, Derrick Comedy, my first YouTube sketch, zombies in Williamsburg, Metrocards, ECNY Awards, and Improv Everywhere shirts off.

Well smack me up and call me Susan. More reports are trickling in that the UCB has gone topsy turvey and added people to teams left and right. You talk about a shake up? I’ll give you a shake up.
Alright here’s the dilly with recap:
- Adam Pally (Hotsauce, Beverly Hills) is now a member 1985
- Chelsea Clarke (Bombardo, Tantrum) has moved to fwänd
- Betsy Stover (Cowbot, Ice-Nine) is now a member of T.R.U.C.K.S. (is this new?)
- Ryan Karels (Creep, Krompf) is now a member of DeCoster (replacing Eugene Cordero)
- Ben Schwartz (Hotsauce, T.R.U.C.K.S.) is now a member of Tantrum
- David Siegel is now a member of Tantrum (WOOT!)
- Jeffrey Marx (Tantrum) has moved to Beverly Hills
Alright the real news for me is David Siegel. I’ve improvised with this dude a whole bunch and he’s the real deal. Before my old group Joe Loves Hobos was axed, Dave was added because he is one of the smartest players out there. This is big news and is going to make Harold night and Fridays at Under St. Marks even more difficult to miss. Congratulations Dave.
Gil Ozeri, Adam Pally, and Ben Schwartz, the members of Hotsauce, are all now back on teams. Not particularly meaningful, other than I like that all three are back in NYC. Makes UCB feel like home.
Other interesting news is the absence of Eugene Cordero from the lineups, which makes me a little sad. I always look forward to seeing Eugene on Harold night. I really don’t want to elaborate without the facts, but I’m sure he’ll turn up sooner or later.
Okay, so Eugene has turned up, a little sooner than expected, on Reuben Williams replacing Chris Kula who has moved out to LA to become rich and famous writing for MADtv. Congrats Euge! I’m exhausted, I need a nap.
Da, da, da, da. Do the the shuffle…
Okay now I’m ahead of the curve, rumor through the grapevine is Chelsea Clarke, of Tantrum, will be filling Shannon O’Neill’s spot on fwänd and Adam Pally, formerly of Beverly Hills, will be filling Will Hines’ spot on 1985.
How was that for a run on sentence?
These are both really interesting moves. Chelsea one of my favorite players currently on a Harold team. Her growth as an improviser, over the last year, has been incredible. Bringing her onto fwänd is a really smart move and one I had not seen coming.
Adam Pally is also a wonderful performer, who was surprisingly not put on any Harold Team in the Decoster, Reynard, $12k shuffle a few weeks back. This was really surprising as Pally is an really smart player and played such an integral role in Beverly Hills. Seeing him again a few weeks back in the Hotsauce Cage-Match reminded me of what a strong player he is. I’m interested to see what effect he has on the 1985 line up. Being such a different player than Will Hines I’m interested how the team incorporates Pally’s abilities.
So, watch for the announcements, see if I’m full of shit, and go see these two new line ups.
Simple, I do something to you which makes you do something to me, etc. that’s it.
Peter Gwinn on “what is the game of the scene?”
Wow, really behind on this post. Shannon O’Neill and Will Hines have joined The Stepfathers! I had just been thinking I wonder who’ll be joining onto the Stepfathers now that Billy Merritt has left for UCBLA. I had thought either Will Hines or Shannon O’Neill might have been added.
It’s a pretty incredible line up and improves an already incredible show.
Although we still miss you Billy.
